The University of Michigan Library acts as steward for our collections; we preserve and make them accessible for research, scholarship, and education. Our website provides public access to a wide range of material, including online exhibits, digitized text collections, archival finding aids, digital image repositories, our catalog, and a growing range of materials in many media, held in many locations.
An essential part of our mission is to make information and resources available for educational and scholarly purposes consistent with copyright law. We evaluate copyright before making collections material available online. When possible, we provide rights information in catalog records, finding aids, and other information that accompanies collections or items. It is the user’s obligation to evaluate rights issues in light of their own use. Transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use or specific agreement requires the permission of the copyright owners.
Materials authored by our staff and librarians that appear on our website fall under a Creative Commons CC-BY license, and you are free to reproduce or use them, provided you give proper attribution to the University of Michigan Library. Please note that the CC-BY license does not apply to materials for which we are not the copyright holder. It also does not apply to staff profile photographs, or photographs that contain easily identifiable images of students, faculty, or staff.
You do not need permission to use public domain materials, that is, materials that are not covered by copyright, though we ask that you give proper attribution to the University of Michigan Library.
If you have questions or information about the copyright status of any material on this website, please contact us. Kindly include a link to the relevant content for our reference.
